The story of Sankofa is based on an African proverb: “it is not taboo to go back and fetch that which you have forgotten,” meaning that you can't know where you're going unless you know where you came from. The spirit of Sankofa encompasses taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present to make progress in the future.
